Rappers We Like member Symbolyc One is actually best known for being one third of the hip hop group Strange Fruit Project. Their album "The Healing" was awarded among iTunes Top 25 Hip Hop Albums of 2006. Producing for artistsuch as Ghostface Killah, Erykah Badu, Young Buck, Little Brother, Rah Digga, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire and much more he's diversifying southern hip-hop and polishing its dull image.

RWL: How are you doing?

Symbolyc One: Doin great and blessed.

RWL: We've seen big things with you and the SFP (Strange Fruit Project) how'd you all connect?
Symbolyc One: Myth and I are cousins and I met myone at a job I was workin in Waco. And we just put it all together cuz we had the same likeness as far as goals and music.

RWL: Now you rhyme and produce, which do you prefer?
Symbolyc One: Producing hands down. Lol!

RWL: Name some of your musical influences?
Symbolyc One: too many to name. Marvin Gaye, Andrea Crouch, Barry White, all that 70’s soul and gospel stuff.

RWL: What equipment do you use?
Symbolyc One: I'm using Reason right now. along with tons of other keyboards and modules.

RWL: Now one thing people know about you is that you're a family man! Do you find difficulty balancing your life with music?
Symbolyc One: At this point I think not, the reason bein' is that my family is so involved with my music so it all connects and makes sense.

RWL: Whats in S1's CD player? (what are you currently listening too?
Symbolyc One: My new album The Music Box and a lot of new beats…Lol. Also listening to Angie Stone and Joss Stone.

RWL: Any other artist/producers you hear today that keeps you on your toes?
Symbolyc One: Too many to name… Swiff D…Amazing! Picnic (he’s on my beat team)and tons of others man.

RWL: Where are you currently? And hows the weather?
Symbolyc One: I’m actually in Oslo, Norway right now. I'm touring with my group(SFP) in Europe right now. its alil chilly out this way.

RWL: Will there be another "OneMind" album?
Symbolyc One: When the time is right there will…. Illmind and I actually talked about it out in Atlanta. Its gotta be the right timing tho.

Symbolyc One: I gave some beats to Sha. He passed along to some folks including Buck. He recorded it. someone leaked it. and there it is..lol

To commemorate the release of Invincible’s lifetime-in-the-making debut album, ShapeShifters (in stores TODAY!!), we dedicated this month’s entire podcast episode to the latest & greatest of Invincible’s collaborations & compilation tracks - plus as always, some B47 exclusives.

1. Invincible - 1996 WJLB FM98 Freestyle
I was 15 on this, which is why it sounds like I’m on helium. I didn’t know how to count bars yet so if you listen close you can hear them trying to cut me off. but i just kept going. LOL!

2. Invincible - Pick Your Poison (prod. Waajeed) (Fat City/Bling47)
This was on Waajeed’s The War LP, and he originally made the beat for Tiombe, but I fell in love with how off-and-on beat it sounds, almost like a staggering drunk. On the surface this is about Hip-Hop addicts but if you listen close the meanings of the lyrics are as layered as the beat itself.

3. Dabyre feat. Invincible & Finale - Viewer Discretion (Ghostly Intl.)
Dabrye once told me he makes beats on some MSDOS program with the green and black screen, which is why his beats sound like UFOs. For the subject matter and sample in the middle I dug up one of my favorite flicks of all time, Born In Flames, to inspire me and Finale.

4. Invincible feat. Helixx - Perfectionists (prod. Supa Dave West) (Rawkus)
Originally slated to be my first single on Rawkus back in ‘99, another version of this later appeared on Lyricist Lounge’s Underground Airplay mixpilation. The incredibly talented Supa Dave West produced this and is singing on the hook as well. This is still an ANOMOLIES anthem to this day.

5. Athletic Mic League feat. Invincible - Got ‘Em Sayin (Turn It Up) (prod. Haircut & Forekast) (Lab Technicians)
From AML’s official debut, Sweats & Kicks. The craziest story about this song has to do with AML pressing the vinyl single up in Eastern Europe somewhere where they found a really cheap deal. When it got to the airport Customs called them in and had them re-sticker every single record because it had the wrong country code.

6. NowOn feat. Invincible, Illite & Vaughan T - だれか (Who) (prod. The Lab Techs) (A•Side Worldwide)
I left home when I was 15 and crashed on Mikey from Now On’s couch that whole summer. We would do nothing but get twisted and cipher all day everyday. This was our first official collaboration since so it meant a lot to me.

7. PPP feat. Invincible - Detroit Winter (prod. Waajeed, co-prod. Saadiq) (Ubiquity)
I originally wrote this to a really dark and depressing beat that Waajeed and Georgia Anne Muldrow co-produced. Randomly, Waajeed called me one day and put the phone up to the speaker with this industrial march sounding track that he had flipped it to and as they say “the rest is history!” The line from the hook was inspired by the same phrase written on a shirt my homegirl Bri from Detroit Summer found at Value Village

8. Finale & Spier1200 feat. Invincible, Wordsworth & Jazz - The Ring (Rawkus 50/Soul Step)
From the Develop album just released last year, we wrote this several years ago. Soon as we heard that ringtone in the background of the track we knew it had to be the “love/hate relationship with phones” anthem.

9. Finale & Spier1200 feat. Invincible & Elzhi - Eye Of the Beholder (Rawkus 50/Soul Step)
This joint is also from the Develop album. Finale asked us to write a poetic beautiful verse about all the ugly situations around us. The vibes in the beat really set the tone.

10. Lacks (OKA TaRaach) & Invincible - Real To Reel (prod. Waajeed) (Bling47) *****VINTAGE EXCLUSIVE!****
TaRaach (then known as Lacks) and I ran into each other at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, and he was with Waajeed (who was passing out the Bling47 mixtape “Best Kept Secret”). I hadn’t seen either of them in years so we met up a few days later to catch up and ended up writing and recording this track on the spot.

11. Buff1 feat. Invincible & Guilty Simpson - SUPREME! (prod. Waajeed) (A•Side Worldwide)
Originally Buff asked me to be on a more laid back and emotional track, but when he played me this Waajeed banger I asked him if i could get on this instead to just straight spit and throw off people’s expectations.

12. Grooveman Spot feat. Invincible - Who’s This (Jazzy Sport)
This is a straight spitting joint which I rarely do, but when I heard this Grooveman Spot beat was so laid back and jazzy I wanted to contrast it with some raw lyrics.

13. Dabyre feat. Invincible & Finale - Get It Together (Ghostly Intl.)
Once again Dabrye makes beats like an alien, and me and Finale have fun trying to match it. The track is so hectic it was a perfect canvas to paint a picture of how crazy our daily hustle is.

14. Invincible - The Place Where We Dwell (Part D) (prod. Waajeed) (Fat City/Bling47)
Off The War LP, this is my ode to one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite groups of all time, Gang Starr. Neither of them are from Brooklyn, but both now call it home. My relationship to The D is similar, since I didn’t grow up here but I call it home. The drums reminded me of the original, so I tried to get that monotone Guru style on too.

15. Invincible - Sledgehammer! (prod. 14KT & Haircut) (EMERGENCE)
Dilla said it best… “pay attention maaan!”

With over a decade of experience DJ'ing London's [the real] DJ Dub sit's down with Rappers We Like for an exclusive interview.

RWL: Dub, how’s everything bro?
DJ Dub: All is good thank you... .

RWL: Cool, how’s the London life treating you? How’s the weather?
DJ Dub: The sun is shinning here in the big LDN and I've spent the day getting music together for upcoming gigs.

RWL: So what made you want maneuver the wheels of steel?
DJ Dub: I started off djing around 1990 when rave culture was real big over here, a lot of my mates were in indie bands and I wanted to do something different. I'd always been fascinated with turntables from the Fisher Price one I had as a kid to my dad's precious hi-fi one that i destroyed trying to scratch with!

RWL: Do you recall the first time or video/TV show watched in which you fell in you love with the art-form?
DJ Dub: It was a combination to going raves which got me into the mixing side of things, but it wasn't till I met DJ Yoda that I got heavily into the scratch side of things...I remember my brother gave me one of his first mixtapes (http://theessentialelements. blogspot. com/2008/05/dj-yoda-piano-breaks-2002. html) back in the day when those things were still on cassette and it blew me away…

RWL: Did you learn or did someone just teach you?
DJ Dub: I pestered Yoda to school me, that was 10 years ago now, damn time flies...

RWL: Now the thing that’s so dope about you is that you spin artist and remix tracks from artist like M.I.A to Erykah Badu – that’s pretty bad ass dude – what separates you from others?

DJ Dub: Well it's funny cause my dj style has always been stupid eclectic I've got ADHD for genre, and I used to find it hard to get gigs everyone used to be much more tribal about genre. Now everyone’s much more open to going to a night where you can play hyphy and then Baltimore, disco and then drum and bass… which is good news for me.

RWL: Vinyl or Serato? Why?
DJ Dub: Serato is AMAZING! It’s revolutionized how I dj, and the best thing about it is that it’s just like vinyl. I still have all my vinyl and I still buy the odd bit, but it’s 2008 and music has gone digital like it or not. I love vinyl, there’s nothing like it, and there will always be vinyl, even after they close all the pressing plants. There’s already loads of spots in London where you can get vinyl cut (check out http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vd3d3LmNhcnZlcnljdXRzLmNvbS9kdWJzLw==).There’ll always be a market for stuff on vinyl.

RWL: Do you think it’s smart for aspiring artist with access to invest in a 12” just to send DJ’s in today’s industry?
DJ Dub: I still like getting vinyl in the post but it’s getting less and less. If you’re going to go to the expense then make sure that there’s some demand for your track and spend some time with designing the packaging and make your vinyl stand out.

RWL: Who are some of you influences dude?
DJ Dub: DJ wise I really like what A-Trak and Diplo are doing, have to give big props to DJ Eleven, DJ Ayres and Cosmo Baker, also my man DJ B Cause in San Fran and Squnicy Jones out in Houston. Here in the UK I’m feeling what Sinden & Switch are doing and of course my homie DJ Yoda.

RWL: Everyone says hip hop is dead especially here in America. Furthermore, it doesn’t really seem that way overseas bro! Are hip hop enthusiast saying the same thing over there? particularly in Europe?
DJ Dub: Hip Hop ain’t dead it’s just got fat and bloated and too obsessed with bullshit. There’s still lots of good stuff you just have to look, Andre 3000’s verse on Da' Art Of Story Telling pt. 4 keeps my faith in Hip Hop…

RWL: Since you’re so multi-dimensional and you aren’t stuck solely in hip-hop, what do you feel?

DJ Dub: I’m really into the whole dubstep thing, Skream and Benga, are killing it. High Contrast on the D&B tip, LA’s Acid Girls and our very own Herve on the electro house side of things. I’m liking The Ting Tings, Radio Clit, Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, We Have Band, HonoRebel, and Riz MC. I like a lot of the bassline stuff, on the grime scene I’m into Trimski, L Dot Man, Chipmunk and Scorcher. RWL: How you doing man?
Kenn Starr: Doing good man, just grindin' as usual.

RWL: How'd your release through Halftooth come about?
Kenn Starr: I have to credit my man Oddisee for that. He basically put me on with
Halftooth, where I had the opportunity to submit some material for what would end up being the "You Don't Know The Half" compilation. Everything kinda took off from there.

RWL: Describe "Starr Status" in one word.
Kenn Starr: Solid

RWL: The beats on your album were bananas! What's your favorite song? And how do you choose production?
Kenn Starr: My favorite song varied throughout the recording process and initial release, but now looking back on it, I would have to say "Inside". I feel like that track was the complete package, as far as lyrical content, production, and mass appeal (not to mention it being the song I get the most consistent praise for), all without really losing who I am as an artist. As far as picking production, my process is very simple. I just pick beats that, when I first hear them, my reaction is "I GOTTA have this!". I try to pick what I feel to be the best of the best.

RWL: How'd you hook up with the LBC?
Kenn Starr: I was initially introduced to the crew through producer/emcee Sean Born, who I was working with at the time (around '00-'01). I was pleasantly surprised to find like-minded and talented artists in the D.C.-metro area, and everything just clicked.

RWL: If we took a ride around the city with you...what music would be in your CD player?
Kenn Starr: I think cats would be surprised to hear the variety of rap/hip-hop
and R&B I listen to, from underground type stuff to mainstream. Right now, I've been rocking to Rick Ross's "Trilla", Rashid Hadee, Focus from Aftermath, Rocko (I'm a big fan of Drumma Boy's production), EMC's new album, just to name a few...a lil' bit of everything man.

RWL: How is it working with Talib Kweli & Asheru?
Kenn Starr: It was a cool experience. Asheru's extremely dope and underrated. We actually did our parts here in Maryland, and later Oddisee and I went to NY to link with Kweli for his part. It was an exciting moment for me, being fresh in the game and having the opportunity to work with one of my biggest influences.

RWL: What Next?
Kenn Starr: Right now I'm working on a new EP that's scheduled to drop in the
fall, featuring production from Black Milk, as well as a new mixtape for
the summer.

RWL: Will you be getting GTA 4?
Kenn Starr: Probably not. I kinda fell back on the video games man. Its a very
time consuming and expensive habit, haha. From what I've seen though, its gonna be dope.

RWL: Who do you want to work with in the industry?
Kenn Starr: Aww man, the list goes on and on. Off the top of the head: Nottz, Mos
Def, DJ Premier, Jean Grae, Wale, Masta Ace, Pete Rock...

RWL: Top 5 emcee's of all time? (no order)
Kenn Starr: Wow. That's a tough one. I'll say my personal favorites (not saying they're the G.O.A.T.) are, Eminem, Canibus (circa '97-98), Busta Rhymes (criminally slept on), Jay-Z and Mos Def.

RWL: Give me one word that comes to mind when I name these artist.

Kev Brown: Genius.

Jay-Z: Legend.

Kenn Starr: It's a beautiful thing. One thing we need more of around here is that sense of unity, and its good to see cats coming together to try to make something big happen. Hopefully it'll continue to pick up momentum and really start making some noise and gettin' the attention from these labels that we deserve.

RWL: Any new aspiring cats you feeling? And Whats advice do you give to cats true to the artform?
Kenn Starr: Well seeing as how I still consider myself to be aspiring, I would
have to look amongst my peers. Having said that, I would say Emilio Rojas, the Strange Fruit Project, Kaze, Hassaan Mackey, Rashid Hadee, Tanya Morgan, Supastion, Skyzoo...alotta dope cats out here doing their thing. As far as advice, stay true to yourself. Plain and simple. The
rest will fall into place.

RWL: Any Shoutouts?
Kenn Starr: Shout out to the whole Low Budget crew, the whole DMV, all the fans
